Edward's Pipes

Edward’s pipes were originally produced in St. Claude France when Francais actually was a world-class pipe maker with longstanding business & political connections to Colonial Algeria that allowed them to obtain the finest briar.

During the tumultuous 1960's, Edward’s created a business model to offer the finest briar available in both Classic and Freehand shapes - all at a fair price. They bought the company & equipment and cornered the market on the finest, choice Algerian Briar just before the supply vanished in political turmoil of Algeria's independence. Edward’s packed up both machinery and briar-treasure to America, safely caching the essentials to create a new pipe-making dynasty. This was a coup, for the 70’s and 80’s were grim years for pipe smokers as quality briar all but disappeared.

Edward's Design Philosophy is hard to pin down, think of their style as the "American Charatan" with unique & clever twists all their own. Today, they fashion pipes in several locations across the USA. All of Edward's pipes are Algerian Briar - a fact very few pipe companies can claim, and all are oil-cured utilizing natural finishes - no strange concoctions are used to interfere in your tastebud’s dance with the briar. Algerian, Calabrian, Sardinian, Corsican - take your pick, but Algerian Briar is generally considered the finest smoking briar ever used. When combined with oil-curing, Algerian takes on a magical quality that even Alfred Dunhill recognized as far back as 1918 as the choice for both his Bruyere and Shell.

www.otcpipes.com has a nice collection of vintage Edward's pipes along with scans of Edward's catalogs.

Missouri Meerschaum Pipes

Missouri Meerschaum began as a favor. In 1869, a woodworker named Henry Tibbe in Washington, Missouri was asked by a customer to try to copy a hand-made pipe carved from a corn cob. The customer was so pleased that Tibbe began selling them in his shop. Within ten years it became the focus of his firm.

In 1907, the company was named the Missouri Meerschaum Company, because Tibbe likened the smoking qualities of his corn cobs with those of meerschaums. The company grew and other companies followed. At one time, more than a dozen competitors existed, but over the years, they fell by the wayside, leaving only the original- Missouri Meerschaum.

For a great, affordable piece of Americana, every pipe smoker should own a Missouri Meerschaum pipe.

In 2014, for the first time in their history, Missouri Meerschaum introduced a line of pipe tobaccos to use in handcrafted Missouri  Meerschaum pipes. These blends, which cover virtually every genre, were made specifically to taste their best when smoked in a genuine Missouri Meerschaum corn cob.

Gasparini Pipes

In 1938 Mario Gasparini, with his wife Ida, took his first steps into the world of the pipe. Today his daughter, Marisa Gasparini, sits at his desk; since 1977 Marisa and her husband, and now her daughter, carry on the tradition of her family.

At the beginning of 1950's, the building, that still today hosts the production department, was enlarged. In 1971 the offices and the warehouse were moved from Milan (where they were situated for marketing purposes) to Luvinate.

During those years the skilled workers and our direct partners have always followed the history of the Gasparini factory, becoming very fond of it and devoting themselves, with care and love, to the making of each pipe, with the personal fantasy and skills of the artist. We would like to take this opportunity to thank those artisans who, with their creativity, gave, and continue to give, life to the Gasparini Pipe factory.

In our production we only use selected briar from Italy and in small quanitites from Greece. We only use naturally dried briar, without using other ways to dry it faster. It would speed up the drying process, but doubtless it alters the harmonic process of the wood fibres. We leave each block of briar in our warehouses to rest and dry for several months, or even years for those pipes of higher quality. The dried blocks of briar then go to the hands of our creators of models: they follow, with art and fantasy, the grain of the wood.

The cycle of manufacture is basically divided into two separate branches:

  • Pipes from the series "Fatta a Mano" and "da Collezione" are completely hand made, rigorously produced from the best selected briar; the estrus(?) and fantasy of our masters is surely more evident in these series of pipes.
  • Serial pipes are partially machine made (the bowl, shank and drilling) and they are divided into various categories based on the quality and finish.

If we should list the series of pipes which marked our manufacture during years, we can surely mention:

  • "M.G.M." started in 1965; a pipe with a classical line
  • "PRESIDENTE" made for the meeting in Rome with the Italian President, Sandro Pertini (1977)
  • "COBRA" with a sinuous shape and a peculiar drilling (1979)
  • "Gasparini SPECIAL" always made with classical shapes (beginning of the 1980's)
  • "DIAMOND" large pieces with silvery band; smooth or sandblasted finish (beginning of the 1990's).

Besides these series with very classical lines, during the years we have always made the creation of unique pieces for the series "Fatta a Mano" (Hand Made) and "per Collezionisti" (for collectors).

Another particular feature of our manufacture, is the pipe with a Meerschaum bowl that we obtain working with pure block Meerchaum, inserting it in finished pipes.

Stanwell Pipes

Stanwell is one of the best-known names in premium pipes, having started making pipes for the Danish market during World War II. After the war, Stanwell pipes began exporting briars and became an important part of the Danish revolution of pipes in the US. Stanwell's styles range from classical to modern, fluid, distinctly Danish designs, all at very affordable prices.

Stanwell pipes also have a great series of pipe tobaccos, with a very Danish flair. Choose from eight great varieties including Stanwell Classic, Stanwell Fruit and Vanilla, and Stanwell Mealnge that have been incredibly popular in Europe for years and are taking the US by storm.

Savinelli Pipes

The Savinelli family and its many skilled artisans have been bringing quality to the pipe smoking world since 1876. Using only the finest grades of Sardinian and Corsican briar, every Savinelli pipe is made with great care and pride in the knowledge that each pipe will eventually make someone very proud and satisfied. While Savinelli has always respected tradition, they have also become very progressive over the years, always displaying great attentiveness to correct proportions and harmony resulting in a complete range of both classical and modern shapes. To own a Savinelli pipe is to possess a treasure.

Savinelli also has a line of premium pipe tobaccos with a variety that will assure each pipe smoker of being able to claim one as their own.
